Sage in History:

Scientific Name: Salvia officinalis

Name Meaning: The genus name, salvare, comes from a latin word, which means , "to save." officinalismeans that it was registered on official lists of medicinal herbs.

Sage seems to be most commonly associated with the smudging ceremonies of the Indigenous Tribes of the Americas (herbs most commonly used for purifications were cedar, sweet grasses, tobacco, and later sage), but it was used for healing, purification, and magic in other countries for centuries before that.Sage is native to the Mediterranean, but varieties of it were also naturalized in the Americas. Meaning, they were established in those areas.

The Ancient Egyptians used it in rites of fertility, and records of its use date back to about 4000 years ago. They also used it as an herbal ingredient in embalming and healing diseases.

The Romans used it in foods to aid with digestions. It was also used in meat preservations.

Charlemagne reportedly had it planted in Germany in 812 AD for use in trade and medicine.

Medieval monks used the herb for healing and therapy.

The Ancient Chinese used it for stomach, digestive, and nervous system problems.

Ancient, Celtic Druids used the herb, along with oak moss, in purification and healing ceremonies.
