Some helpful rules to take into account when creating a wand.
Never kill a young tree for the purpose of your wand.
Always take the smallest branch you can, or the smallest part of the branch that you can.
When carving the wand, always try to collect the shavings and compost them.
Choose a wood that you feel reflects the wand's purpose
Never use a rotting or moldy stick for a wand .
Explanations:
To kill a young tree to serve your pleasures and needs is wrong when you can take an old tree or use a branch that a tree casts off naturally. This wounds the environment and reflects badly, both karmic-ly and morally, on you.
Taking more than you need is wasteful and has the same problems as killing a young tree, albeit on a lesser scale.
This waste is unavoidable but you should still try to integrate it back into the environment to help new plants grow.
This will make sure the wood matches your intentions to offer the best results.
Moldy or rotting sticks will mess up the magic that you channel through the wand not to mention the dangers of infection.

Depends on your belief, Ballad. I view wands as a way to channel one's own energy, and I don't use crystals at all. My wands work fine. Basically, I'd say it depends in how the person views the importance of crystals and on tools in general to their practice. In most cases, no crystal should be fine.
Crystals exist in the mineral plane and have a connection to avichi the infernos all energy's placed in a crystal are bound by the 96 laws of the mineral kingdom there not necessarily needed but they hold energy's great
I made sure to follow these rules. I found a small branch at the base of an oak tree in my back yard and shaved all the bark off. I didn't have to cut it to the right length either it was already 12.9 inches long. Afterwards i gathered the shavings and dumped them at the base of the oak tree were i found the small branch. and even though it is still incomplete every time i touch it it seems to vibrate in a positive manner. I think i did something right or a little to well i don't know. I will have to finish it to find out.
A wand would ordinarily be between 6 and 16 inches (15-40 cm), but it can be any length equal to or shorter than 24 inches (60cm). 24 inches or more is considered a staff. The stick/branch needs to be thicker than a twig, but apart from that thickness is up to you. To get the stick, first ask the tree for it's permission (or blessing if you are considering brown/green magic as your speciality) and then touch the tree. If the tree is unusually cold, do not take the stick. Find another tree. If the tree is unusually warm, thank it and pick the stick up. If the tree doesn't change temperature, try again later.
Pick the stick up if the tree is warm. If the hand and arm you're holding the stick with goes warm, that is a good sign. If it feels right, it is right. If you have any doubts, try another stick. Only take what you need from a tree. Once you've found the stick, you'll need to evoke it's magic. HOWEVER, if the stick burnt very hot when you picked it up, this stage may or may not be necessary. Evoking a stick so strong may cause an adverse reaction.
When you've evoked the magic of a wand, do not do magic with it for a little while (at least 24 hours). It needs time to energise. Make any necessary adjustments. And after a day (or however long you want to wait) try it, and it should surely work!
Are you able to purchase a branch or wood? You say to ask the tree permission but I wouldn't be able to do that so will that be a bad idea?? Also does it matter if it's small like 12 inches or large like a walking stick?
Any length is acceptable as long as you're comfortable with it. Generally anything longer than two feet can be considered a staff but the purpose of both a staff and a wand is the same. You can buy a wand or wood, but the idea behind finding one makes it more personal. Just tell the tree you're using it and thank it.
I would add the branch needs to be the length from your elbow to your fingertip [so when you're done making it, it'll be the right length] but I agree you shouldn't take a giant branch or kill the tree. I typically take sticks that have already fallen, but if you wish to take one from a tree, I would ask the tree/spirits for permission and leave an offering to thank them.
I'm not 100% sure, @MoonFury... From what others have said, it might have been specific for that person's Way of practising the Craft. I honestly don't use fallen sticks, since most are rotten by the time I find them.
Actually i havent even used a wand made from wood outside my home i have bonded enough to just use a rock i fell has a match to what i need atm and now i carry 2 stones with me incase needed
Im going to try to get a wand tomorrow from the big oak tree in my yard. I know oak is used more in healing spells so I feel like that would be the best for me
I believe so, but it's up to you and the way you practice your Craft. I have 1 that I charged with grey energy for general use(since I do both 'white' and 'black' magic)
Also it is important to keep in mind the season in which you should harvesting a tree. I believe but correct me if I am wrong when the sap is descending is the best time for the overall health of the tree. This normally is during the Autumn season, but may differ from place to place. I may be wrong on the timeframe but during certain seasons harvesting branches and such can actually be more harmful to the tree than others. And, of course, if you'd rather not take from the tree itself you can always use a branch you've found provided it is dry not wet and without rotting.
