Can you do a protection spell for someone else a couple of states away?

You should be able to. Magic isn't weakened by distance. Depending on how strong you want the spell you could use anything from a personal possession or their full name. It is possible.

Certainly. But when the person is not near us, it's best to use photographs, full name, birthdate, address, personal belonging or gift they have given you...basically anything you can use to directly connect your spellwork to the individual. But if you know the person very well and have seen them many times in person, I find that it is just as easy to concentrate on the image, name and personality of them in your mind. It takes practice but when you do it right, you should feel as though you are with them and your casting directly in front of them.

You can make a living through witchcraft, of course. Generally, it is considered bad form to make large profits. It is like practicing medicine in a way, - the practitioner needs to earn a living :)
