Arrogance

It seems to me there's a lot of arrogance on these forums.

Or is it just me?

I don't tend to think it's arrogance, it might seem to see like that but actually that some people are very straight forward and tell it like it is but it's not being rude.

Sorry that your upset about this and hope that your experience here with us is better and you stay with us and grow.

Always if you see something rude or offensive mail a moderator and talk to them about the content that upsets you!

Sad but true. You gotta weed out the decent people from those who wouldn't know their head from their behind. There's being confident in one's abilities, then there's developing an inflated ego because of them. I know with me, I have to _really_ watch out at sounding like an arrogant twit sometimes (and I apologize if I come across that way to anyone!).

Hopefully you can find someone a little more humble :) They do exist!

Indeed. The helpful ones tend to be a bit quieter as well because that maturity might have some age (and so responsibilities) behind it. Some of us can only get on in a meaningful way once or twice a week.

Another thing to bear in mind is some of the long-running veterans of the site tend to see the same questions pop up with every new arrival, and they just don't have the wherewithall to spend the time to rewrite the same answers or explanations every couple of weeks. So they either reference articles, tell people where to look on the site, or give a shorthand answer that might not have the what's and why's in detail. So they might come across a bit curt without meaning to.

Tone is a tricky thing with the written word as well because there is no actual voice behind it to give a sense of emotion or intonation. So it is up to a person's linguistic command and knowledge of using word choice to convey tone. (... And maybe the occasional smiley to hint at tone through simulated facial expressions.) This is why I typically prefer to take the extra time to write things out fully.

I guess writing with good expression is just a long-learned skill... even in a casual forum- or semi-casual like this one. Heh... I've been at it for nearly 20 years and still take a lot of time reviewing what I write and checking my phrasing. It can mean it'll take me 30 minutes or longer to put up a simple post... and limits how many conversations I can take part in... But it lets me be as helpful as I can be.

Considering that we have thousands of members here on this site, one would expect in the grand scheme of things that at least some of them will be arrogant.

That being said, it is also wise not to consider someone to be arrogant if they correct a member when the member says something that isn't correct. Many of us will offer such corrections so that the particular member and any members who read the post will have more accurate information

And of course with the annonimity of the internet, some people will act out in ways that they might not if you were talking to them in person.

But it has been my experience that threads such as this one are not useful in the grand scheme of things and only lead in the end to hot tempers and hurt feelings. So I am locking it at this point
