Familiars/ menageries

How can I tell if I have found my menagerie/ familiar? How do I find it or does it find me? I've been in awe of hawks and I have a great amount of infatuated respect for them. Could a hawk, be my menagerie/familiar?

Is there a difference between a menagerie and a familiar or are they the same thing?

A menagerie is a collection of wild animals kept in captivity for exhibition. A familiar is a spirit that has entered into a contract with a witch to help them in their practice. Such as to access the spiritual planes to obtain information, carry out tasks, work on the spiritual planes at the behest of the witch while the witch works physically towards a goal, "tank" a magical "hit" or a hex or curse to protect the witch and many other things. They are spirits who take on the form of an animal but they are not an actual animal such as a hawk looking spirit is not really a hawk, it's just using that form. Nor is a familiar a physical animal such as a pet dog or cat , etc because they can not do the things that familiars do. In terms of your other questions I'm going to need you to be a bit more clear , I'm not really understanding your questions.
