No. Not always. Some people don't even have a magical name because they choose to keep both sides of their life together. Some people just choose their magical name at random. Your magical name is your choice. They aren't chosen by the feelings they give off. If you decide that's how you want to do it then feel free too. The reason why they aren't based on feelings is because you don't have to have a magical name. There is no real reason for it unless you have a reason to have one.
Actually yes, the name you choose is giving off with sometype of emotion. Otherwise it would be a meaningless name, also yes it is true that it is the choice of the person if they want a name like that.
I'm not saying you are wrong. I just disagree. It's not all about emotion. I didn't base my magical name on emotion and I have met several practitioners that don't. You are honestly the first one I heard of doing so. If is not meaningless because a meaning is not based on emotion. You give it a meaning.
For those that don't know, you don't even need a magical name. If you decide so then make one.
I disagree a lot Arrianhod.
A name that you choose often has some deeper meaning , some actual connection to you and your path. It's like people, have the name 'Odinsson' or 'Lokisdottir' . These names to be fully worth what they are worth have to be given, by the gods themselves.
Not religiously, the name will have a much deeper meaning than the two or more words you may read in a different language. They are often chosen because I feel right , the name calls out to the person in question.
However, it is true some people do not have a name , I do (Dewin Quinn) , and it isn't necessary to have one. It is also true to say that some people just pick random words and put them together and basically hope for the best - which when choosing a name you should never do.
My name was given to me by Athena, my first matron. And that was over 3 possibly 4 years ago now. And ever since all the gods I worship have referred it to me.
In times gone by your last name would indicate your family trade.
So in you saying its not based on feeling, i think is wrong
It seems that we have a small misunderstanding here. It should of been worded, "A magical name is not just based on 'feeling'.", that is why I said "not always".
Neither of us are right nor wrong. This topic can be based on one's personal experience and opinion. There is no true accurate answer.
This is my standpoint:
You don't just "feel" your magical name. You know it and you give it's meaning. Of course it can have a deeper meaning depending on you and how you interpret it and rather a god or goddess you work with gave it to you. You just know it. It may feel right but a feeling can change over time. Most of the time, if not always, when I know something after I go through meditation or something like that for answers I know it. I know this by experience. For example: I had a crush that I felt like was the right one, even spiritually, but I was wrong because I didn't truly know it and that feeling changed.
My magical name, Saturn Legend's Witch, was not just based on feeling or feeling at all. It called upon me and I looked into it then I knew it was the name for me. The name, Saturn, even had associations with a goddess I use to work with. I knew the name. It did not just feel right. I knew it was right.
Why?
1.) Feelings can be misinterpreted.
2.) You got to know it because sometimes you may think it's a god(s)/goddess(es) choice just because you feel it but that may just be a thought form. When working with a god or goddess you got to know. Not just feel something. Feeling gets you little by little but when you know something it might get you to where you need to go.
3.) Feelings can leave questions.
4.) You may feel doubt.
5.) You decide to use your magical name, not based on feeling, but because you know it. A magical name is not based on a feeling but it's based on being your choice and you just know it without doubt. You choose it because you choose to follow and listen to the god or goddess you work with.
6.) Many more reasons why someone may disagree.
But Arianrhod,a magickal name is also not a random name to pick up.The person should feel a connection with the name.Though i agree more with AutumnNight, you are not completely wrong.
I used numerology to find mine. Its like putting on a robe or casting a circle. Its like having another tool to aid me in getting into a meditative or trance like state and perform rituals or spellwork. I have never told another person that name. It is sacred between me and the god and godess. Its how they know me. It is special because only they know.
