It would honestly be safe to just assume that most people are stupid. Or at least ignorant. Especially if you are in America. At least where I live, literally all I see is people thinking and repeating everything that everyone says/does. No one actually uses the brain that they were born with. Expect things like this to happen.
Probably 3/4 of the people here on SOM believe that Wicca is just spellwork of one kind or another. Very few even here understand that Wicca is a religion and really has nothing to do with spells of any sort. When those who claim to be Wiccan talk only about doing spells, why would you expect the general public to think it is anything else?
no, most of the time when i explain i'm Wiccan the erson goes 'so, like, you cast spells? can you cast a love spell for me?' either that or 'do you read tarot? can to give me a love reading?' and 99% of the time the answer is 'ask them out.' it's better than being called a devil worshipper or something. a few people have questioned me thinking i just haven't found jesus and need to be won back. just laugh it off, maybe cast a spell and get a quick five bucks [of course if that goes against your view of the Rede don't]
I kept my witchcraft secret for most of my life. Even some of my close family didn't know. I learnt when I was very young that it was a waste of breath explaining.
And I was always amused when some mother said, "I don't believe in spells and all that nonsense.". She would then encourage her five year old to perform the ritual of blowing out the candles on a Birthday Cake and making a wish!
It's not so much that people are stupid. Just that they jump to the strangest conclusions. Like the person who says, "I cannot stand Opera! I hate it!". And walks away whistling one of the better known Arias.
Groucho Marx once had a radio show called "People Are Funny.".
Yup! I'll agree to that!
Its just i dont mind keeping my practice as secret but when it needs to be implied and truthfully used for well being of someone i get strange not even curious replies. Moreover not that they hate the craft they start saying you need to be more realistic which angers me most.Being ignorant is another thing but being ignorant of the subject and judging it becomes worse!
That makes sense. I've been told it's un-Christian to have any kinds of talismans, but the same people who tell me such carry prayer cloths, anointed or blessed items, etc. The same disconnect strikes me when people are okay with "laying out fleeces," but opposed to tarot cards and so on.
Being wiccan is not about listening to what others have to say it what you believe. Wicca is a religion just like every other religion it is as real as you have faith in it. People are stereotypical now-a-days with all the hype from Hollywood. Just keep the faith and nothing else will matter. Angel
As soon as I met my flatmates and we started discussing faith. The first thing they said to me after I told them I was wiccan was that they asked 'so does that mean you do spells then?'
In school I learnt a great deal about other religions but I had never known about wiccan until I was about 13 and I found it on my own. So I believe this is the problem.
Despite I believe and know that Wicca is a religion, it's not just that. Some do cast spells, but it's not the basic thing of the religion... That's what is also failed to understand. You can be a wiccan and you can cast spells, they are not mutually exclusive, but one does not define the other (don't know if it's the correct wording or expression).
