Well as far as I can tell its not physical like a shoe or a book or anything. But I can see it and if I hold it like I described earlier I use it to project sometimes and also to summon things. But I've been warned against opening any more portals for the time being, especially since someone or something REALLY wants me to and has been promising me everything under the sun as a bribe to try and get me to do so. So I haven't in a long time.

Assuming the same laws apply to all spirits, when I project I have little influence on that plane/realm because I have no attachment to that realm I am just visiting, So if that creature or person whatever it is can come here to visit he has little influence just as I do when I project. Opening a direct portal would allow him to travel here and attach permanently or semi-permanently though and so that is a risk I wont take.

The "keys" if that is what you will call them to be better related, are in PHYSICAL form as HUMANS.
The "keyholders" guard these "keys" with their very lives. It is someone they are close with. It could be a life long friend, a sister, cousin, son, daughter, the list can continue.
