I agree with you Mysticwolf, October has always been considered a time of year when the Veil is thin and the dead can reach across with ease. Many cultures have particular rites or celebrations during october to help the passage of the dead or to celebrate the already deceased.

Anyway, Back to the OP's question there are several types of spirit. The dead can leave an imprint that has no actual awareness, from a cold spot to repeating their demise. Those usually have no ability to comprehend the world beyond their death and are more memories then intelligence. Beyond those are the actual intelligent dead, the ones whom Can cause hauntings or interact with us on a given level.

Beyond them are a whole slew of negative and positive spirits, some who fufil natural functions like any being in nature and some who have become negative or positive because of pecularities in their existances. And finally beyond all the lesser ones running around are the True Angels, Demons and Gods. Plus the odd enlightened human or two :)

nah its just for gettin them out of the room or house, helping them cross over is a bit more harder and complicated

technechly ghost are said to appear only to special people. They need something from that person. You can't tell wheter is evil or not.
