The energy is neutral, how you choose to use it will give the positive "white magick" or negative "black magick" charge. Even those spells that seem "white magick" can have a negative effect on another. Do what you feel is best.
There is no color in my opinion, nor do many follow this color formation. Black magick is however usually known as evil, or hurt magic. White is usually dealt with healing, and protection. I will explain a few more depths dealing these subjects, for you to see.
White magick :
****************
White magick is typically known as good magic. This variation is usually used for healing, friendship, fertility, and ect, ect, ect.
Black magick :
***************
Black magick is known as bad magick, or evil magick. It usually issues death, revenge, and so called hurt spells.
Grey Magick :
****************
Grey magick is a combination between both white and black magick. However this is what most people use, usually good but sometimes say a hurt spell if in danger. This is used for healing, Heath, fertility, hurt, and revenge, and ect.
Magick however has no color! Many people don't use this term, but that was a various topic if you decide to follow this category. Remember magick has no name, or color..it's magic and that's all it is!
call it what you want. when i started out i knew people who called healing spells 'green magick' and love spells 'pink magick' it helps to categorize during your year and a day, but not much else. i would read some beginners books to help you understand.
if you really wish to learn magick one on one, its best to find someone offline, but you could look around the site for a coven teaching what you wish to learn. few people who know enough to teach actually do for a series of reasons, so a coven might be your best option for a teacher, but there is plenty of information out their if you look.
You can practice whatever you want, I dont know where you heard that you practice one or the other from :) only wiccans only practice white magick, and other paths of course. Its rare one chooses one over the other, the is often a fusing.
My opinion is magick doesn't have colors. I just classify mine by colors. I still don't believe they have colors. Magick is energy, it doesn't have colors. Here's the common classification of magick.
1. White magick. Healing cleansing, stuff like that.
2. Black magick. Curses hexing, stuff like that.
Grey magick. Neutral magick.
Pink love spells.
Green wealth.
And so on.
As I said magick doesn't have colors. It's based on intension.
I don't claim to be white or dark witch, I don't believe in either. All magick has dark and light aspects, so I find it hard to believe a person is strictly white or strictly black. Magick is magick simply put.

It is very difficult to explain magic to someone just starting to learn. Mainly because there is so much rubbish written about it.
So, this what I was taught,
Magic is changing one or more things into something else.
Only the other day, I posted a little about the magic of cooking.
You gather together the ingredients, pop the mixture in the oven, and it "changes" into a cake! That's magic! Changing.
Scientists do it all the time. But they are afraid of the word "witchcraft", so they call it "research". But it's the same magic that witches have been doing for centuries!
