Many children see things that adults do not. They are much closer to the spirit world than we are so this gives them the ability to see people such as ghosts.

You may have a gift in this area if you want to practise it. I don't know that much about it but I am sure someone else will know.

But why did it stop happening as I got older

there was this study i read a while ago where they said that children are natural born clairvoyants or psychics and were able to see spirits but it fades as you reach adulthood. But ofcourse its not that common but does happen.
