Study which path of magic you would like to follow and learn about the witches or wicca's of that religion Laurie Cabot is a very high witch to follow she is one if not the last with of salem (where they had the witch hangings) and follow occults and Satanism then learn how to do there type of majick and if that does not work do voodoo or hoodoo they both work whatever you do or are (:

Knowing how magick works would be first. Learning, understanding, and practicing basics will help this. Then learn how to do a spell. Remember, a spell is done with intent, a reason to do it. It is not done just to do one. This could be the problem, as you are asking for a first spell. Beginners are recommended to read frums, in the general info section. Study the basics, there is nothing worse than feeling like you don't know anything. Spells work, but it takes time. Here's a few question's for you to ask yourself!
*What kind of spell are your trying to do? (Fantasy, and other mythological spells can't, and will never ever work!)
* Is your spell needed, or necassary?
* Do you know what the spell is fully ganna do, are you able to be prepared for the actions that will come?
Ask yourself, and Learn the basic's. This will help, magic is not easily done, it takes skill, and belief. It won't happen love night, it may even take weeks.
A good number of the people who replied have indeed casted spells before. Just take their advice, they are trying what they can to help you, you only need listen.
Learning to do magic is not a flip a switch thing . If you have the basics down and try to cast a spell and it does not work then just maybe you do not have the basics down as well as you think. Or maybe the spell does not fit your intent .if you have mastered the basics you will know how to change or rewrite the spell to fit your intent. Another major error in spell casting is visualization and most people require a long time to truelly master this because your trying to guide your subconscious to your minds intent the easiest way to guide your subconscious shy of self hypnotization is through visualization! This is merely my opinion so feel free to discard this information if it does not fit your path!
Spells work differently for different people, and sometimes spells dont happen for logical reasons and small mistakes. If you are just starting off, dont worry about it. Read, experiment (start small), learn to feel your energy and find the source of your power, and write a spell from the heart (meaning let the words flow naturally --- feel it).
Personally, thats how I started off and it works for me. But everyone is different. So try any or all of the recommendations people have given you

You need to mean to believe in yourself Magickly as well as have very strong focus,don't just to through the motions with your spells,feel them as you work then and have a strong vision of the outcome
Learn to Meditate
Read a lot,on Different Topics
Learn at least two divination methods and keep trying.
