Ren is correct, the origin of demon is daemon and was defined as a lesser god. Later, the Romans took the word and changed it to demon. Since Christianity considers that there is only one true god, all deamons/demons were classified as being wrong to work with and therefore evil. The latin translation of demon (de mon means "of evil"). That is why many higher beings, gods and goddesses of various cultures were classified as "demons" in "demonology". If you look into the original origin of many so called "demons" they were in fact ancient gods of Greek, Sumerian, and Babylonian cultures to name a few.
People focus way.too hard on the origin of the word and use that to fill in the blanks but its not accurate. The concept of demon like spirits predates christianity and can be found world over. As well, daemon was used to refer to any kind of spirit as where demon was made to.refer to an evil spirit. And it wasn't even first used by christians, it first appeared.in a hebrew translation. Of course there are daemons/demons/spirits and physical people who can be manevolent or benevolent. That doesn't make them all the same.
Solomon worked with demons, and he was given an honorable death by the god that gave him his power over angels and demons. (Allah/Yahweh). The Quran states that he died standing, leaning on his staff. And that his god had termites eat away at the base of the staff, slowly lowering him to the ground. His reign was very peaceful for his kingdom. He was believed to be the greatest King of Israel. Only after he died did it split occur. The "Songs of Songs" was originally the "Songs of Solomon", he is one of the authors of the Bible and he worked with demons!
But yes...deamon are terribly evil! That would be sarcasm, if you didn't pick it up.
On a side note, my recent research has led me to believe that djinn and daemon are one in the same (just different names for the same beings from a different area of the world). Since Pitch is studying demonology, I felt this would be an interesting possible connection to bring up.

I'll add a bit on to the history of daemon. Daemons are generally seen as the spirits of the earth and the spirits of the ancestors. The Roman later expanded on this definition by venerating their ancestors as minor gods over the household and all the people living within. The Greek word was daemonos or something along those lines. The Romans later created the word daemon.
The Agathos Daemon is the most important daemon to those who practice the Greek faith. It is a spirit usually depicted as a snake that guards over the individual and the house. The Agathos Daemon is very similar to the Guardian Angel of Christianity.
To those who practice the Roman faith the Genius and Iuno are the most important daemons. The Genius protected males much like a Guardian Angel. The paterfamilias's genius (male leader of the family) was worshiped by the entire family. It protected the house from evil and sickness. The Iuno was the guardian of women. It wasn't worshiped but generally individuals would give offerings to their daemon.
