My SoM Advice for Newbies

To every begginner reading this post:

• "It's best not to go around and ask many people to help you with the basics. Learning for yourself is key here; many people frown down upon mentorship, because to be a mentor, they'd need to teach you in person."

Know this, many people on this site will help you, if you come forth with specific questions and can prove that you have invested some amount of time and energy in this venture. This assures us that our time, experience, and help are not being thrown away on deaf ears.

• "For writing spells, that is all about using creativity and symbolism in your actions. You must have full belief that your written spell will work."

There are many sources with pre-written spells with plenty of knowledge and practice behind them. Your best bet in the beginning is to learn how to weed out fake spells, understand why the components of that spell (the words, items, and timing) work together for the desired outcome.

• "Instead of learning about one Pagan sect, learn about a multitude so you can see what you connect with the most. I recommend starting out by researching Wicca."

If you are drawn to Wicca, that's fine, but don't feel any need to look it up if you aren't gunning for a religion or if it doesn't draw you in. First and foremost, listen to your instinct and follow it something that interest you. Understand that studying a practice in no way binds you to it, nor should you jump the gun and start practicing it without giving it plenty of serious thought, many people on site will recognize if you are jumping from one practice to another and this will discredit you. Feel free to explore a multittude of practices, but do not fall prey to the combining of practices tht have no business being together.

My own tidbits of adivce would be:

• Think for yourself, but don't be afraid to ask:

Many people will ask endless questions wishing to be babied. You have the ability and the resources to find many answers. People here are more than willing to help, but we will not walk for you. we can point you in the right direction and give you a nudge here or there, but part of getting to the end is learning to learn and grow on your own.

• READ!!!

Online articles, credible authors, terrible authors, etc. Keep reading! The written word helps pass down knowledge and can help you to be inspired and create a mind that thinks with the necessary processes to perform the things you wish to perform. Reading can help you form the necessary associations to be successful, but you must commit and give enrgy and time to your studies. Challenge yourself!

• Be perceptive to both yourself and the world around you

You'd be suprised how often our practice calls to us first (nudge here, a book there, a story from a friend, a dream). You won't necessarily recieve epiphany inducing signs, but if they are there USE THEM .

• Don't get stuck studying forever. Actually practice!

You should be a life long student, forever learning and growing. Many people, even here, get caught in the rut of never experiencing allthe things they study. The practice is but words on a page or screen to them. These people aren't obvious at first, but in time it becomes apparent they aren't growing or learning things in a sensory manner. Do yourself a favor and practice!
