I am self admittedly going to say I don't know much about Norse mythology, I have read through the story of Baldr's death and of course the events leading to Ragnarok. One thing kind of stuck in my mind when reading the story of Fenrir, that even the Gods cannot control him, that Fenrir is Love itself. An animal that has no control over its own nature, with the capacity to tear a man apart or even swallow him whole. As I had decided to attach one platonic notion to the beast I had to do the same for the hunter, Odin. And just the simple image, the look of Odin; The old god beard, the old eyes that have seen it all, I saw Wisdom. It makes sense that Love and Wisdom are on opposite points of the scale of human emotion. One is unpredictable, irrational, can drive people to make foolish actions and threatens to devour all things. The other is the ability to draw knowledge from past experience, to rationalise the current state of affairs and uphold the order into the future. The two beings (or platonic states) are always going to be at loggerheads until they finally destroy one another (I consider Fenrir's death to be an action of Odin, since it was Odin's death being avenged by his son [I was thinking maybe Vidar is Nobility] and thus their tale ends, where Baldr's tale really begins, I assume logically if I'm drawing these kind of comparisons that Baldr is Goodness/Human kindness.)
I can think of no two greater forces in the human psyche than Love and Wisdom. Even though civility began because of Human kindness, we only prospered because of Love and Wisdom. I say that greed is merely the intoxication on the love of life and science is the propagation of wisdom. And that both of them can only be taken so far, whereas human kindness will carry us all through, to wherever we are going.
I once heard 'Omnia vincit Amor' - Love conquers all. Isn't that what Fenrir was fated to do?
Fenrir is certainly not an easy deity to work with, and as I quoted somewhere else he is called the God of Last Resorts for a reason. But it's certainly possible to work with him, on some levels, as long as you're aware of his nature and have logical expectations out of it.
I read a story and I'm not sure where. But it's Fenrir and AngrBoda's pups. They were sent to the the sun, and their names describe the sunset and sunrise.. I can't remember the pups names, but I'm curious who else has heard this story, and could you fill in the blanks?
You're referring to Skoll and Hati, Fenrir's offspring that chase and eventually devour the sun and moon. There's a lot of speculation as to whether they come from Fenrir in consort with Angrboda, as Angrboda is technically Fenrir's own mother. Anywho, here's the link to that article I did on them already:
Thank You.. It was drivinv me nuts not remembering. And I rather liked the part that shes also His mother. I also likr that AngrBoda is described as Wolfish...
