"I want a mentor!" Awww.

There are thousands of topics named 'Teach me majyx lollll!!11" or "I want a mentor", and I just fail to explain the phenomena.

When I was younger, I never wanted for someone to show me things. First, it kills all the fun, and second, teacher can't teach you everything he knows. Well, not this kind of teacher. Magic is not that kind of knowledge- he can give you information, but magic is a personal skill, so to say, and nobody but you can learn it.

Second thing that seems to happen almost always with cases like this, is that those who ask for mentor only ask to learn a specific skill that can have very few purposes other than showing off to friends (telekinesis, transformation, talking to animals, throwing lightning bolts, levitation, element control-what the hell is that anyway? ) Another version of this is coming and asking for a mentor, but the person has no clue what he wants to learn. Just imagine someone who wants to,say, learn to speak in another language and comes to language school, and when they ask him which language he wants he says'Ummm...geeezz...no idea..."

Third interesting thing happens when someone who can barelly spell comes, and asks for a mentor, but instead of actively asking help from people who offer help, little student leaves his email and says his mentor to contact HIM. Pshhh. I have no better things to do in my life.

And fourth, which is my favourite, is the case when someone in his early teens who can barelly spell and seeks a mentor. Then someone even younger and with equally horrible spelling comes along and says he is a Mermaidic Fairy Ancient Vampiric Werewolf High Priest Of The Order Of King Arthur and offers help.

So now. What makes people seek a mentor instead of literature and practice?

Well, I guess people just wanted some help. I mean there isn't a lot of information in the wide public related to modern magick. When I first got into magick(which is not long ago), I found out Magick is a correct spelling. For those like me who are interested want to learn more about this craft. Yet all things are verbal. Many sites said feel the energy. But for a average dude, the only source of to feel "energy" will be the static electricity that zaps one's skin.

But I do encourage people do type and SPELL correctly. Punctuation will be nice. Some people just PM me a long paragraph without correct spelling, punctuation, and spacing(this is the worst). This makes reading very difficult and annoying...

And please people stop faking random titles. It's stupid when people entitle themselves lord whatever and Satan whatever. It's disrespectful for those who actually deserves the title.

People learn in different ways.

I agree there are many here who have a limited view of what Magick is and what they want to do. But they are soon weeded out or see differently

Some people can read a book and understand. Some people need to phsyically be shown how to do something. And some people do well with someone explaining it in simple form and encouraging them along the way.

The problem lies in that people think magick is going to be something super-sensual. There are, indeed, different types of learners the same as there are different types of teachers. Auditory, visual, combined. How much of magick, when it comes down to it, is really sensual? What can you show someone about magick? What can you say, that wouldn't be better read with text it was meant to be surrounded by? I agree very much that the best path here is in literature and practice. Young people can be so excitable and even gullible, and where that is expected, magick is not a walk to believe in, rather a thousand practices to try. When giving advice to newcomers who have P.M.d me, I will walk them through some basic exercises, prescribe a ton of reading, and finish with these words: "don't believe anything, for any reason but one. No matter who says it,tear it apart and believe only what's still standing.

I find bad spelling from someone whose first language is English to be a proof of how much they don't care, in fact. I also think this for people who just leave their email and think that 'teachers' will compete for a chance to show them things. My point was that if someone really can't learn on his own and needs a mentor, he would grab and claw for his attention and every scrap of knowledge, not just saying 'hi Im Mis/Mr X teach me magic here is my email, I want a lesson daily', and I want it all for free :P

Really now, my problem is that mentor can tell you to concentrate and feel the energy flowing through you, or to attune to the energy of your crystals and feel their life, or to become one with the universe, but those aren't instructions one can just simply follow. "okay, I'll become one with the universe right now" :D those things are perfectly clear to the mentor because he felt them, but an apprentice didn't. He can't be taught that by someone else. Second problem is that mentor can't guarantee success in a big field that is magick, where one can't be certain that the same spell will work the same for two people or even for one person in two different times. It's not math...
I do offer my help wen people ask for a mentor. But they never contact back.

My sister wants to do magic(k), and she asks if she can use my notebook with information on correspondences, runes, herbs, crystals, moon, blahblah...Sure, why not, you can copy what you like. She goes home, but leaves her book of shadows at my place. Even though it's not very likely that she forgot it I call her and tell her that her book is here, she says waaaaah, wo cares (?). Next time she visits after say a week, (we live close, why is a problem to return for it?) and I return it to her, and she says angrily "You mean, you didn't write spells and correspondences inside for me?!!!!? 0_0

You wanna know the worst part?
This is a true story.

Perdurabo, that is a great thing to say to beginners, and I am going to 'adopt' it :)
not even all literature is good.
Dear beginners, explore every corner you can find. And leave titles
for others to give to you. They will be so much sweeter when they finally arrive after long, hard work :)
