Charging items

I've been wondering about this for quite a bit. What does it mean to charge an object with ones own power? Does it mean to put a hand on the object and hope for the best or does the object need to be surrounded by other things...like in stuff in ones home? I'm greatly confused...and hope I didn't confuse anyone else...

Say for instance, you want to charge 'crystals' for magical usage. it involves focus, meditation, and ritual projection into the item. You regard the item as 'magical' from that point on.
