In the late 1600's during the same time as the Salem witch trials there was a splitting in Witchcraft. Witch's made a cut in magic lines. Some people believed that witch craft should only be for good magic. Others enjoyed the dark arts too much and split from those who preferred the ways of good.
They created a religion that most people referred to as Black Witchery, or now days Black Wicca. Yet amongst those who studied it, it went by a different name, Carkanism.
While witchcraft seemingly died for a while before being reborn as Wicca, Carkanism remained alive in the background.
Carkanism was a tongue-in-cheek name that isn't an official term, but it is what people who study Black Wicca usually call themselves.
Carkanism is rooted from three words.
-Croatan - A demon of all demons
-Karkanis - It was a second name for Athena
-Karma - The belief that all things come back to you
Carkanism does dark magick. They believe in doing spells that have blood sacrifices, pain offerings and stuff of that concern. Though not all their spell end in horrid things, they have healing spells and such, the spells are all rooted from evil.
I spent time as a member of Carkanism, so if you have questions about it I would gladly answer them to the best of my knowledge.
I will also occasionally post info about them, maybe even some of their spells. It will depend on the interest people have in it.
cool post, and lovely bit of info i didnt know much about.

Like I said, Carkanism isn't the actual name for it. It is just what patrons of it call it. Black Wicca is the more common name for it.
Similar to traditional Wicca you go through a year of training, growth, and appreciation. During that first year you learn about the basic types of offerings and sacrifices you will commonly use amongst other things.
The year of training ends with what is referred to as the purity sacrifice (no I am not talking virginity). Since During the training it is not actually allowed to truly commit true black spells (dark arts) it is believed that the person is still pure of heart and true to the light.
A purity sacrifice is committed in a penta circle. A large circle is drawn (usually at least fifteen feet in diameter) and then a pentagram is drawn within the circle. The one who is undergoing the purity sacrifice kneels in the pentagon that is situated in the pentagram.
Four older members will stand at each of the corners of the pentagram. Then the high priestess will use an athame to cut both biceps of the person kneeling. They are very thin cuts that actually sting more than they bleed. The high priestess then takes the last corner.
It is believed that the five members contact Hecate herself and ask the goddess to deem the initiate worthy of joining. This process may take only minutes or it can take hours. It is the initiate's job to remain kneeling the entire time.
Once they are deemed worthy the purity sacrifice is over and they are made a member of Carkanism.
--- In the old days it was done slightly differently. The cuts would be deep and it was left in the hands of Hecate to deem the person worthy before they died of lack of blood. This was changed within the last thirty years or so.
Loving the info, I am finding this subject very interesting

There are several forms of offerings and sacrifices that are common. When I was a practicing patron of Carkanism I remember two things that was done more often than others.
Blood sacrifices were common, more common than anything else by far. Generally the cut occurred either on the bicep or the wrist. Blood sacrifices are used actually in healing spells and elemental spells more often than curses. (Remember how I said that though the spells are rooted in evil, they don't always end in evil)
Pain offerings are frequently used for curses, though blood is inevitably part of a pain offering, it is certainly not the main part. It is the physical pain that is the actual offering. Usually this will be done by making thin cuts across the stomach over and over. (since a person can survive a gut wound for hours, this is why the cuts are made in that area). Pain offerings are a lot more scary than blood sacrifices.
Though not really common, there is an animal sacrifice. Unfortunately, it is usually a cat. (I have two cats so you can imagine why I might not like this). Though larger spells may require other animals; cows, sheep, goats. When I say an animal sacrifice, I do mean taking the life of said animal. This kind of spell is used for death spells generally.
While rare, I feel I should mention this one; life sacrifices. Taking the life of a human is only used for one thing; resurrection. It is actually logical, no matter what, you can't cheat death. So to bring a life back, a life must be taken. Admittedly there are other spells for life sacrifices, but they just aren't done.
On rare occasions purity sacrifices are used in things other than initiation. Sometimes it will be used in a vengeance spell or a pain spell.
Carkanism does use traditional items and tools of traits. They do traditional circles, and common rituals. It's just that almost everything for Carkanism is rooted somewhere in black magick.
Carkanism does have some differences in the rituals and circles, wine is often part of the rituals. Bleeding does have a major part in Carkanism, and the general feel of darkness in the air.
I do want to mention that there are laws in practicing Carkanism. Some spells simply aren't done.

Think people often misunderstand the true nature of death spells, in my opinion death spells were most often associated with deaths aftermath and it's magical effect on the living or departed.
In the ancient Egypt and Tibet religions death spells were learned in life and the rituals so they could be performed after ones death. ie:Tibetan book of the dead, Great Liberation, Book of the dead and Book of going forth by day.
Sadly these spells fall into different belief bases, religion ,spirituality and magic, and in my opinion should neither be considered curses or hexes.
How one chooses to interpret or incorporate a death spell into magic is their own personal choice.
Although yes it is logical one can not cheat death, im very alarmed at the fact human sacrifice would be considered on rare occasions to resurrect another life.
My personal opinion this is a very sick twisted based religion/path, the cutting of ones self numerous times across ones stomach is sickening! there are many young people in this world whom struggle everyday with some sort of urge or to actually cut themselves as a form of release from their pain psychologically and emotionally and this religion actually promotes this in some ways!..
