"Aradia, Gospel of the Witches" by Charles Leland discusses one specific form of Italian folk magic, namely that of the Stregha. There is a lot of question as to whether the information in the book is historically accurate or not. However, it was certainly one of the sources that Gerald Gardner used when synthesizing what we know of as Wicca in the 1930's and 1940's. Just remember that Stregha and Wicca are two very, very different forms of religious Witchcraft.

If you want to read more on the history of Wicca and the folk traditions which were incorporated into it I would suggest "Triumph of the Moon" by Ronald Hutton and "Gerald Gardner and the Cauldron of Inspiration" by Philip Heselton.

Actually Bug I wasn't responding to you at all. I was offering some information to Merric who began this thread.

That being said, I sort of doubt that a book on spells will have much historical discussion of the roots of Wicca or Witchcraft that is apt to be reliable.

It doesn't matter if the author is wiccan or not. It is better to get the information in other books than spells books. For in spells book they give you the basic infor and you want to expand your knowledge.

There are plenty of books out there written by Wiccans that are full of bad information. On the other hand the two books I suggested are generally considered the most reliable in terms of historical accuracy.

I agree with Lark. I can put an example of a wiccan author who give fluffy facts, Silver RavenWolf.
