Center of the World Myths

Throughout human history, Man has gazed at the heavens in awe. Since the dawn of our spiritual quests, the birth of Shamanism & Animism, sympathetic magick, etc., myths of "Center" have emerged.

Looking carefully around the world today, within and outside of the "great" religions, you can see this ancient mythos of the Center of the World fold into nearly every establish belief system.

This myth involves the spiritual "center" of the world, and primarily concerns the pathway from HERE to the upper & lower worlds. Though developed initially within the tribal Shamanism practices of Mongolia and Northern Russia, areas of Northern Europe, and independently in remote regions of Africa, it was soon influenced and mutated by the philosophical systems of "civilized" China and India.

The Center, as it is still called, was represented by a tree or pole (think, World Tree or Tree of Life), as well as a ladder, a building (pyramids or ziggurat), or other high-reaching symbology. Marked, painted, or decored with ribbons and/or the "world colors" representing the 3 worlds, it was a symbol of awe.

It represented the path by which souls passed from this world to "heaven" or "hell", and the route traveled by the Shaman to visit those places.

The upper focus of the Center was the North Star (at least in the N hemisphere) and the lower focus was deep within the earth itself. Being thus explained, Center could be placed anywhere on the surface of the planet. Because of this, the individuals of the time saw the central post of their tents, or the opening at the center of the yurt roofs later used, as this point, and often had an altar at the base of this, appropriately colored and decorated.

This mythos seems to be shared worldwide is very disparate regions and tribes, but like all things "true" has nearly disappeared within the larger mythologies of "organized religions" and civilations.

Don't know if you find value in this ancient view...just thought it was a cool thing to share.
