Good advice,Lucan! As for myself, I gave up making potions years ago! I can buy them already made, at my local magic shop. Also, there is a local herbalists, and another (very large shop!) in Leeds, the nearest city to me. Of course, all the books are good for anyone wishing to make their own.
Yes you can make herbs in potions. Just becareful on what you mix together. I know herbs i have strange tastes to them and make sure not to get the ones that are poisonous. I have never done potions before either.
Potions were originally created as medicine. Tinctures, vinegars, teas and the like. The negative side of the origin of potions were poisons or hallucinagenics created to either kill someone, make them ill, or cause them to see things that aren't there. Even to this day, some people believe that consuming or bathing in hallucinagenics will cause them to make better contact with the spiritual world or see fairies/spirits/etc. My thoughts? Yeah right!
common hallucinogenics to beware of is salvia (white sage) and mugwort. Mandrake can kill you, so can mistletoe and many others out there and I only suggest using them if you are a licensed homeopathic healer. Thyme tincture is also hazardous in too large of an amount (which is only a few drops!). If you're going to consume potions or have anyone consume them, I would suggest picking up a very good book on herbalism first so that you can cross reference the stuff out there before using it. If it says non toxic and has no contraindictions (bad effects in combination with other herbs, drugs, or illness/disease) then you can drink up.
However a really good "potion" to start off with (and an easy one) is four theives vinegar. It is an excellent one because not only do the ingredients have magickal correspondences to protection but it is also great for your immune system. Use apple cidar vinegar (from the mother which means unfiltered and unpasturized) as the base. And all the ingredients can be found at your local grocery store. What could be better? =)
It depends what the potion is for. For example, if it was a potion for sleep, you would use sleep herbs. If for love, love herbs.
Also, if you are thinking of a drinking potion, make sure it is not toxic.
To be officially classed as a potion, it must already have some form of liquid in it, again, with another example, if you was doing a love potion, rose oil would be great as it is associated with love.
love potion:
boil some hot water in a metal tea pot.
pout a pinch of lavender(cut) and a pinch of white willow bark(cut) in a empty tea bag and secure the top so it does not spill in the hot water in either the tea cup or pot. let it seep for a while.
give to a loved one or someone that you wish to be in love with to drink.
healing potions:
Anti Headache/ Pain Potion:
boil some hot water in a metal pot.
pout a pinch of white willow bark in empty tea bag and secure the top of the tea bag so the white willow bark chips do not spill in the tea cup or pot that is filled with the hot water.
let it seep for a while.
Drink the hot potion or give to a someone to drink.
Week Disease Defense Potion:
boil some water in a metal pot.
place a pinch of whole cloves in a empty tea bag and secure the top so that the whole cloves will not spill in the tea cup or pot of hot water.
let it seep for a while.
now drink the hot potion or give it to a friend to drink.
Strong Disease Defense Potion:
boil some water in a metal pot.
place a pinch of whole cloves, green tea leaves(cut), peppermint leaves(cut), jasmine flowers(cut).
secure the top of the tea bag so that it does not spill in the tea cup of hot water.
now let it seep for a little while.
now drink the hot potion or give it to a friend to drink.
If you're using bark or root for medicinal reasons they should be boiled for 20-30min. If they're magickal only, then steeping is fine. But nearly every potion has herbal properties that are used along with magick to increase the success and completeness of results.
While your tea is steeping, gaze at the water and focus on your desire for that "potion". This can even be done with plain tea. Use spring water over tap.
I don't buy empty tea bags. Its a waste of resources. Instead you can find a variety of metal ones. I have one that looks like double spoons that fit together and I have another that looks like an egg on a chain.
You may want to look into kitchen magick as well. Herb magick (green witchcraft) and kitchen magick compliment each other. It helps me to incorporate magick into my daily life with a busy schedule.
