I was thinking about an idea for this website. The SOM company takes out a loan. Then, they make this website like Wizard 101,except you learn REAL spells, potions, ect. There could be quests your proffeser assigns you and you do REAL spells in them, and once a quest is completed you learn harder spells. Also, there could be 4 classes from the 4 elements and you choose which one your in.I think it's a good idea because tons more people would learn magick. What do others think?
I agree and disagree with birdlover. Some people come to this site expecting it to be like a video game. Some come to learn and share.
@Jayde10 i think that is a very unrealistic idea for someone to even consider, if they know there craft well. I think you should make yourself familiar with what this site is all about.
(also how would the teachers be paid and who would pay back the loan, then the site would start charging money, and some people just can't afford that.)
The site would be able to pay the loan because it would still have the shop. The proffesors would not have to be paid because they could be a computer OR experts could teach.People would first think it is just for fun,but when they sign up there could be something saying it is real magick, not for fun.And they could have to check a box to agree that they beleive in magick.
Actually, I think it a great idea! I play Wizard101 and it's really fun, but I could see integrating that idea with a real magickal curriculum working out. Even if SOM doesn't do it, I think it would be a workable idea for someone. There's an online wizardry school already that teaches real magick, but not in video game style. If someone took the ideas and merged them, I think it would add to a sense of reality. Almost like you were attending a real physical mystery school. And, essentially, you would be....well, without the physical part, obviously. Great idea!
It is a really good idea, but I think that it would work better as text-based instead of MMO-based. To me, the "quests" would really be lessons that involve magical interaction, such as meeting in astral form. But beyond doing something like that, I fail to see how this idea could work. I don't really see how you could integrate a game like Wizard 101 with the real world. I think that the furthest this idea could go is really a glorified chat room. It could turn out really good, don't get me wrong, but I'd like to see how it would work before I put stock in the idea.
I think it is a very riskay idea, people would complain about the spells being cast saying they are "bad" or "evil" and yadda. Also more integrity would be lost to the craft because people would think it's a video type thing rather than a faith and life long path. Plus, every gets there call to magic, and if they saw a legitimate site selling a video then what do you think they would react? My guess is just throw it into the ridiculous pile (talking about all magic). So my verdict: bad idea it's not worth the credibility loss and influx of fluffies.
I totally 100% agree with you DarkSun, and Jayde10, the shop doesn't make enough money to pay back a loan. Not everyone on here buys their magical supplies from the online shop. Look at this realistically, there a lot of other shops online to buy magical supplies. You can get candles and incense from Walmart, specialized shops in the mall, and many, many other places. Some people choose to make their own wands, alters, and such. You see Jayde10, I'm not trying to be rude or anything, just realistic on the thousands of other options than using this one shop.
I think it might be best to decide whether it's a good idea or not first and if it seems worth it, then try to figure out the financial end. But also, I think whether or not it's a good idea is sort of up to personal preference. The people who have posted here that it wouldn't be taken seriously probably would stay away from it, but I'd like it because I actually think I could take away real knowledge from it. Like sometimes I'll play a computer game and there will be something that contains real occult knowledge in it. Even if it may be sparse. It's great though and sometimes I'll try to seek out games that I think are more likely to contain things like that. Games are a great way for me to learn. It's just a part of my learning style. And others who learn well from games and interaction might really like a games style environment. But people with a different learning style may not get much out of it. I think it just depends on the person.
