Truehunter10 made a post on the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram a while back. It's one of the basics for Hermetic Ceremonial Magic, but it looks like people from all paths find it a good discipline and an effective ritual.
I agree with kts, but you asked for suggestions for a protection spell and I suggested one -- should depends on you but I personally think the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram is a pretty good ritual to start with. It's got all the impressively arcane words and ceremonial gestures that ought to satisfy someone who just wanted to try magick (so I didn't suggest the kind of magic that begins with like several days of regular meditation first), it's a basic/beginner's ritual, its effect is protective so it's what you asked for, and it includes grounding/centering/drawing energy which you didn't ask for but every ritual ought to have a little of.
The only problem I can see is if you don't believe in God and angels, but like I said this ritual has been used by people of every magical path so these have been adapted to suit them. But, since your other posts show your interest in smiting demons, I would think this theurgia would also be ideal to start with.
There's another problem if you associate the pentagram shape with evil rather than protection because of movies or whatnot but a little research would hopefully broaden your view.
I actually knew about pentagrams bering protection, but i wanted somthing, not so obvious to someone/somthing if it tried to attack/kill me.
At 1:30am today i use Protection Spell in the bath and after i said it 5 times i felt a bit drousy, but i dont know why.
If you perform the LBRP when you wake up in the morning it should last about 12 hours (some recommend performing it in the morning when you wake up and again before you go to sleep.) But Flagg also posted a protective ritual in this thread based of the Sator Square.

Latin for "The farmer, Arepo, operates a wheel" but supposed to be powerfully magickal because it's the same when you read it backwards and up and down, and if you scramble it up you get the Latin "our father" and two alphas and omegas. The magic's more in the focus of will than the words themselves I think-- I've heard some chaos mages could even make expecto patronum real, so there's if you wanted something really quick-acting...
