Sounds as very good idea to me .Obsidian is grounding and protective stone and some consider snowflake one to be protective for women .Iron also is thought to be protective and related with the planet Mars and the deity with the same name .
Obsidian will reflect back all negative energy because it is basicly a black glass ,created from past vulcano eruption .
You can set the obsidian in the iron cage as in same time you can carve the stone with some sort of protective sigil or symbol (if you have the right tools and the skill of course to do so ).If you decide to put symbol i would go with arrow pointing outwards or the the rune Tiwaz (Tyr) .Also you can go with anticlockwise spiral .
The amulet should be cleansed and charged then given .
Advice her if she feels like something negative has been thrown on her to visualize strongly obsidian and iron gate between her and the person that is targeting her spreading in all directions around her .
I will not advice she wears this pedant all the time or she will be way too much grounded and unbalance may occur .She may wear it when she is around crowds or around negative people and places .Also you need to consider iron maight rust with the time .So you may think of protective coat over it so it wont go rusty .
I hope that helps my heart is happy when a gentleman decides to step up and protect his beloved woman .
Thank you. It also looks nice now for the center use a ruby a sign of love and rubys are very powerful and protect forlonger periodsof time but dont forget but a antirust rhing on the silver so it dosent rust.

I agree with the others on opting for silver instead of iron. Iron is very difficult to work with on a small scale. It isn't flexible and its brittle, so instead of how sterling will bend or dent, iron will snap.
If you want iron though, there are many gemstones that contain iron! Bloodstone, Hematite, Tiger Eye, and dark colored (black/brown) Obsidian all have iron in them. But to be able to wear it all the time, you should add another stone to balance. I would suggest something like Lapis that carries high vibrations. You can buy attractive beads and string them for an easy, no nonesense project. Just be sure to read up on stringing beads, it must be done right with good quality beading string (a kit of beading tools will usually run you about $30). You should knot inbetween each bead, and each knot can be a chant/mantra that you bind into the necklace/bracelet.
