Well then.

Having decided to become a Heathen (Wicca just doesn't fulfil my needs anymore) I have decided to work with Hel and Loki.

I invoked Loki a bit ago, and didn't feel his presence. No change in the atmosphere. Perhaps I am just dense? I invited him into my life, to be my friend, to be my patron God in magickal workings.

Does anyone have an personal experience with Loki? What should I expect, should he decide to participate in my life? I am expecting chaos of some sort (I will be thankful for it) and not sure what else to expect. I have read some on Loki, but I don't want to get trapped into a reconstructionalist relationship with him.

And, before you ask how I came to choose Loki, it was not through the movies. I have yet to see them (no spoiler alerts!) I chose him because...well I am in dire need of chaos. That may sound somewhat insane, but there you have it.

Honestly your relationship with Loki is your own. It is a very personal thing and could be vastly different from my own, or the relationship he has with anyone else. So there isn't anything really set in stone as to what you should expect with him. However. As a whole, he tends to keep his follows on their toes. Yes, he is a deity of chaos but he doesnt create it in your life without purpose or a lesson to teach *most of the time*. He is also a deity of change and will bring about personal changes for his followers. If you're looking for big changes in your life then Loki is the man to go to, so to speak.

Regarding not feeling him, don't concern yourself too much with it. He can be pretty aloof. It could just take some time for that to develop for you. How did you go about inviting him into your life? Did you perform a blot, leave an offering, or just say an invocation? That could have something to do with it. And again, it isn't the same for everyone. You might experience him in a different way than someone else does, so you might not feel his presence like another would. It doesn't mean he didn't take notice.

Depending on how you want to label yourself:

  1. Lokeans tend to be Heathens who work mainly with Loki and view him as their patron. They are usually open to other deities and focus on his family, the Rokkr, including Hel.
  2. Rokkatruars are open to the entire Rokkr pantheon (Loki, Hel, Fenrir, Nidhogg, Surt, Angrboda, etc) and dont claim to have a specific patron/matron in their practice.
  3. Or eclectics, who tend to be open to many different deities and occasionally focus on one or two.

I have a lot of personal experience in regards to Loki. Many other Heathens here do as well. If you need some more information regarding Loki-honoring, offerings, or just want to chat about experience feel free to mail me or any of them. We are more than glad to help. And welcome to the community.

If you're looking for chaos why don't you practice chaos magick? I would've thought that would be more in line with your requirements than switching to being "heathen" . Loki might introduce an element of quirkiness/ chaos into your life but Hel is a very deep and complex goddess to work with. I for one would not associate Hel with Chaos. She's very protective of the dead.

Rokkatruars might be a good way to describe my practice.
Thank you for the welcome and the information!

I invoked him and just spoke from the heart. I stumbled over the words a bit, but it was truly what I wanted to say, so I guess that counts for something.

Maybe it was because I wasn't very...ceremonial about it? I've never really been a big fan of an elaborate ritual, wanting everything neat and laid out before me with no muss and certainly no fuss. I invoked him while sitting on my couch and then just started talking. Is that where I messed up? I wanted to make a good impression, by taking on a...not casual but personal approach.

I understand. But chaos is not all that I am looking for. I switched to Heathenism because of what it is centered around: family. And I do understand that Hel is very complex and a deep Goddess. I just decided to famaliarize myself with Loki first.

I'm sorry if I come off as not serious and probably fluffy. My post could probably been better written I will admit.

Loki isn't the type of deity who cares if you dress up with a robe and invoke him with an altar and candles or if you sit in a bean bag chair eating cheetos in your underwear.

He'd probably even prefer the latter.

Got to love, Personified ...

In my personal experience, I would suggest a little more covering, than just underwear.

Loki can be a bit "touchy", at times.
