spells that backfire.

I am really a new guy here and do not really know much about spells.
I had few questions in my mind -

1. Do bad luck or nightmare spells backfire more strongly on the person who spells them?

2. How one should protect himself from all kind of backfiring spells?

Spells don't exactly blow up in your face. "Backfire" as a lot of people discuss it is more the result of unforeseen circumstances. When you influence another, something may happen that you didn't expect and -that- can come back and bite you.
