I always meditate sitting directly on the earth when possible, or use trees to ground. If you want to meditate on a specific element I suggest meditating by candle flame or fire, in the bath, on the ground, or near a favorite type of incense or outside on a windy day. Each element has a different "personality" I guess you could say. And they all mean different things to different people, like anything else. If it is specifically the land you want to be more at ease with then just spend more time with it, its creatures, the different plants that grow there, etc. Leaving offerings may also be a good idea.
Sounds like a good place to start :)except,I live in a desert so trees are not very common here. What is common here are stunted bushes and wide open skies which is fine because i feel more at home with windy areas.I do know I'm definitely a cold weather person,so what should i picture in my mind while doing so?
Write an ode to the element expressing your desire to connect with it and pointing out its admireable attributes you are already in tune with. and wait for the full moon.draw down the moon. Recite your poem and light a candle with representations of the element around it, in the window and let it burn all the way out. Wait for the next full moon to do the next element.

Maybe picture that you are becoming one with the landscape. Feel yourself sinking into and becoming the dry soil, the blue expanse of the sky, the intangible flowing freedom that is the wind. also take notice to the animals there, how they thrive among the land and how you could too.
I dont know how to draw down the moon, and its a bit tough to get things accomplished where i am. I live in a never sleeping neighborhood who are racist against us.Living a few miles away from Juarez tends to do that. Its easy to get judged here
If you are on the u.s. Side then you should be safe. If not you may want to set up some form of magical protection first. Its a safe idea anyway. Letting a candle burn in a window doesnt look suspicious either. When you are looking for a representation of the element to put by the candle just pick something small and decorative. And while you are speaking your poem with all the lights off from memory in the open window with the moonlight shining down on and into you, basking in its glow, realy filling yourself up with its energy and light that you started doing when you drew down the moon before you started reciting, nobody can tell what you are doing.
I do live on the U.S side but honestly its not that much different. The hispanics are everywhere and 98% of them are racist, especially to white people. They are always suspicious of something. Also,my parents dont like the whole magick scene because its "Of the devil" (Xtians by the way)
