A sign?

This morning in class, we were doing an assignment. I took one of the books and I was trying to get to the correct page when I stumbled upon a black feather. It had a smooth top while below, it was more ruffled and messy. At first, I thought of this as a stroke of luck because I needed a feather for meditation purposes. I wanted the feather to look nice, so I tore away the ruffled mess that was stuck to it. I kept the feather safely tucked away in my Prose Edda. It wasn't until the last period of the day when I showed my friend and my mentor in witchraft and the pagan way that he said it was a sign. I'm thinking it could be a sign from Freyja or Odin but I'm not 100% sure.

So my main question is: What does receiving a black feather signify in the Norse religion?

could be a sign from odin, that is Huginn and Munnin his crows.

If you were focusing on an intent and you happened upon a "coincidence" then its not really a coincidence.

Congrats!

I will follow that advice, but I really don't know how to speak to a god..Is there a proper way to do it? What would you recommend? Plus, if I need to acquire candles or incense there is a great chance I won't be able to do so.((Risk of people being suspicious))

If you're worried about people being suspicious of you're preying to an older god, you can always order supplies online.

You might also look into what rituals were done by Norse shamans to commune with the gods. It should help you decide how to approach finding out more.

Sometimes a feather is just a feather.

However, feathers do have some connection to some Norse deities. Odin, as mentioned, had the two ravens who had dark plumage. Freya had a falcon cloak with dark plumage, Valkyries were often thought to have feather cloaks around them.

As far as I am aware, there isn't any kind of historical signifigance of receiving a black feather in Norse tradition. However, you might simply try to divine and seek out whether or not is was a sign. There are always the runes which you can use to do this. Or you could attempt seidhr, if you know how to do that and are comfortable with the idea.

Best of luck.

Odin has crows/ravens so it can mean he wants to see you for something.Or it is just a feather as a bookmark. Summon him to be sure.

Odin's ravens, Huginn (thought) and Muninn (mind), fly around Midgard and bring back information to Odin.

They also protect a shaman, while he / she are in their "trance-state" journey.

As for the answer you seek, you'll be "protected", on a future journey...
