You say that you are a Wiccan, but know nothing about it? Have you studied it? Perhaps Lark would help you.

Then what books have you studied since you don't trust the internet?

Nature plays a pretty important part in Wicca since we base holidays around seasons, rituals and spells around the moon, work with herbs and many natural things in our practice and daily life.

I'm not a Wicca, but I have studied it. I met, and knew, some of the original founders of the religion,One book in particular I would recommend is "A Witches Bible" by Janet & Stewart Farrah. It tells all about what Wicca is. There are other books. I am sure Lark will know of them.

People often mistakingly refer to Wicca as a "nature religion" but that is incorrect. What Wicca truly is, as Gardner invisioned it, is a "fertility" cult. Our workings and our Sabbats are aimed at promoting the fertility of the land as well as our own fertility both physical and intellectual.

To understand how nature got tied into Wicca one has to look at the 1960's when Wicca was in its first spurt of considerable growth. This took place about the same point in which the ecology movement also began to be active and vocal about saving the planet. There was extensive cross-over between those who were Wiccan and those who were in the ecology movement and it was at that point that people first began to talk of Wicca as a "nature religion" but that linkage didn't really become strong until the early 1990's. Then popular books on Wicca began to talk about loving nature and what a harmless religion Wicca was since all we wanted to do was hug the bunnies, the trees, etc.

That being said, I would venture to guess that most Wiccans today feel tied to the natural world in someway. Certainly we continue to celebrate the Sabbats to promote the fertility of all around us. And many of us are active in the Green movement to save our planet. Further, the Wiccan view of Deity says that Deity is immanent, in other words, Deity is here in this world and in everything around us. If that is the case then we should treat the planet with respect and care.

So Wicca is not a Nature religion per se. But it is a religion whose members honor the natural world that the Gods have given us and we try to take care of our planet through our actions since its the only home we have.
