Circles essentially provide a protected purified space for you to cast a spell, meditate, etc. The "right way" will vary person to person, and you'll have to research and practice to find your preference.

There are multiple religions and practices that involve casting a circle and it is different for each one. I don't cast circles, but I find that other people can find them useful in setting aside space to practice your magic or devotional practices (depending on the context).

In my belief, all space is sacred or magical space, so casting a circle would really only be useful to me in helping catch the attention of my subconscious to say "Hey, there's stuff going down and I need your help" (this is in the context that the subconscious understands subtle energy better than the conscious mind can, thus aiding in the effectiveness of the ritual).
