I thought that black candles warded against evil, so if that's true how can the color black represent evil or bad?

Actually Blood Red is the usual represention of evil in some cultures. Black represents Good, Healing, Life and such.

It depends on what culture, because the colors can be different.

The color black itself, when in relation to symbolism and correspondences, varies from culture to culture and practitioner. Thus- that is why many people will have different representation and meaning of the color within their individual work or in a collective practice/faith.

Since correspondence has a lot of subjectivity, one may believe that a color is associated to X,Y, Z while another can believe similarly or even the opposite.

I think to answer your question, you should ask yourself: What does the color black mean to me- an individual, in my path/spirituality, and in my life?

If it means ' warding against evil' personally, then it means that to you. If it means something else then black can equally correspond to that as well.

If you are talking about the color black within a specific construct or faith, that has many answers.

The colour black is interpreted differently in various cultures.
For example, the Ancient Egyptians viewed black as a representation of fertility and life because of the soil around the Nile River. Whereas in some African cultures, it represents age and maturity.

Overall, colours can be viewed subjectively. If you believe that black represents protection, then it does. It doesn't have to matter, too much, what different group's of people believe.

When it comes to colors not only can it vary by culture, religion, and practice. But I am a firm believer in psycological and personal reasoning as well. What does this color mean to you? The scent you anoint it with, does it remond you of something from your childhood or a certain person? The way one person constructs a spell is not the same as how others use it. It is for this very reason why when people say they do, "black magick" or "white magick" I find that is so vague and ambigious that it answers nothing. I am not a mind reader and I do not know how you precieve colors so such statements are broad and unhelpful.

A lot of it is what you make of it. I do highly agree with color sorting things in a grimore but that is your own personal book for your personal use with symbolism you are familuar with and understand. Black can be used for curse work, absorbing, to symbolize evil, the night, darkness, loss of hope, death and with which comes rebirth, etc. How you use things is really up to you! :)
