I've been interested to converting to paganism for a while, and have tried a few minor spells. I've also learned how to do tarot readings. Right now I'm focusing on finding my deity god, and soon I'll be gaining a familiar. I've been told that mentorship is frowned upon but I do have many questions that I haven't been able to find sufficient answers for.
What is the best way to find the deity that's right for you? I've been meditating but it doesn't feel like I'm making contact with any spiritual beings.
What's the best way to bless a familiar? I've been drawn toward snakes ever since I was a child, and after I move I'll be getting a ball python.
And lastly, I haven't written any of my own spells yet. What are some of my options as someone who's inexperienced? What can I try to heighten my power and energy?

Sorting through your post a bit...a lot of questions, with a lot of layers...
Wicca is a religion unto itself. And there are some real experts on that here.
Paganism is a broad term describing a lot of non judeo-christian-islamic religions.
Wicca or other pagan religions you can or dont have to use spells.
Spells are a part of magick.
If you want to figure out a deity to connect with, youre on the right track. Especially since youre young. Meditate and become very in tune with yourself and call out to the universe for what you want. You ought to, at some point, get a feeling for your path. Keep at it and be patient. Unconsciously youll be guided to divinity. youll want to read more about a certain asect of divinity and the connections will start...mentally, intellectually, spiritually so on.
Familairs are not animals that exist in the world. They are spiritual or mental constructs.
If youre into snakes maybe find out which deities are represented by snakes? What connects with you?
Power and energy come from your meditation, going into an "alpha" state and drawing power. Grounding and visualization bring that to you. There are articles and posts about that here.
Youll create your own spells using physical components that help you focus that energy. youll release the energy into the universe and manifest your desires. In terms of results, youre looking to even odds in your favor. thats why stuff like vampire spells will never work...it is a physical and metaphysical impossibility.
Read, research and keep doing what youre doing now. Youre starting your path at a really young age and that is really commendable. You are the operator, your power and how that becomes manifest is in your hands. youll meet people on the way that will help. And the vibe i get off of you is that youre probably going to end u helping a lot of people too!

Hi Cedar678,
I have been Wiccan now for over 37 years and I'm always willing to help out someone who is just beginning their Wiccan journey.
The first thing to do is to be clear about just what Wicca is. Wicca is not about doing spells or reading the Tarot although many Wiccans do both. I would suggest, before you commit yourself to being Wiccan, that you do a bit of study as to what Wicca is actually all about. A good place to start are some of the threads here on Spells of Magic. I'd suggest the following:
As Thor has mentioned, Familiars are not physical creatures. They are entities which are created by a magic user, or a spirit that works with that magic user. There is an excellent article on the topic at
As to which Deity you work with, there is no rush to find a specific one. Wicca honors the Goddess of the Moon and the Horned God. It is perfectly fine to simply refer to them as the Lord and the Lady when you first start out. Here's an atricle you might find useful
Over time you may find yourself drawn to a specific God and/or a specific Goddess. Meditation and dream work are but two of the ways to do this. Or see whether there is a particular mythology that draws you towards it. And see if there is a particular Deity within that mythology that you feel a connection to. If there is you could build an altar to that Deity, make offering to him or her, and ask them to look favorably on you.
An excellent book on the topic of working with a Patron Deity is " Devoted to You " by Judy Harrow.
Remember that Wicca isn't really about doing spells. Yes, Wiccans use magic in our rituals and practices, but this is not really casting spells. So please don't feel that you need to be Wiccan in order to cast a spell. But, if you are interested in learning how to write your own spells you might find this helpful - You can read the article at http://www.spellsofmagic.com/read_post.html?post=829629

well for starters Wicca is under the 'Pagan' umbrella, you can be Pagan but not Wiccan [as the old and slightly confusing saying goes 'all Wiccans are Witches, but not all Witches are Wiccan'] so while i'd like to welcome you to your newfound path, i don't think you should slap the Wiccan label on it just yet. research a little more before committing to anything [you might wish to read The Witches Bible by Janet and Stuart Farrar and/or Bucklands Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland for help on the Pagan path but not specifically Wicca. check out the pinned articles in this section for more Wicca information however]
it's not frowned upon to take have a mentor, the community rarely teaches for two reasons, the first being it's hard to teach something like energy work over the internet because you're not physically standing together feeling the same energy to properly scene whats right/wrong with the exercise, and two because it's illegal to teach minors in most places which could land your mentor in hot water. [that's why most on here will answer questions or point you in the right direction, but won't teach]
there's many ways to find your deity, this could take days or years depending on many factors [so don't get discouraged] also, sometimes a deity will come to help you in a specific point of your life, while others stay for life. [so don't be quick to tie yourself to a deity] you say you like snakes, you could look into deities associated with serpents, you might also wish to look into deities from your heritage, or if there's a specific region that interests you [say you've always enjoyed Egyptian history] you might also wish to reflect on yourself and look for a deity with a similar personality. when you feel you've found one calling to you [or one you wish to work with] make an altar, place an offering, and call to them, explain who you are, why you wish to work with them, and if they're willing to work with you. then take the next moon cycle to observe and reflect [leave an offering, and pray to the deity as you feel is appropriate] if you get any answer [yes or no. if no answer is received consider it a 'no' for now] thank them for listening and move on. [you can try again later when you feel you've grown and you still wish to work with them]
familiars are a grey area. historically they are based on a rumour that witches could transform [or control] an animal [ usually a black one like a raven, cat, crow, as well as rats and toads] to do her evil bidding. this has evolved into the believe witches have a spiritual bond with a specific pet. whether this is true or not i chalk up to personal feelings so whatever [also, if you wish to include a pet in your pagan practice, you can always train them, just observe the animal and know when they want to mediate with you and when they want to play] if you wish to bless a pet, there are prayers you could say, or you could enchant their collar with protection energy [if you have a snake you could call on Ra, Seth, Lilith or maybe Medusa to watch over your pet]
well knowing about magick and spells can help you in the writing department [check out the General Information section for some pinned threads] but to raise your energy, you could try charging/ground work, shielding, and making psi balls so you can get use to the natural flow of energy.
