I just purchased a new oracle deck the day after Samhain.
I had hopes of passing it on to my niece, so I went on to pull another card as previously that day I did a one card reading for myself. I had intended to pull another card to make certain the deck is a positive affirmative oracle. I turned the card I pulled over and looked the meaning up in the booklet. I realized then the title of the card and found myself spooked. The card? "Meant for you".
Included in the meaning list was the statement- A gift meant for you, that should not be passed to another.
Dread. Another one of these decks then.
I have another deck that gives me the same feeling when I read them, tarot, that were my Grandmother's. I received them from an aunt after my grandmother had passed. My aunt had taken them from her house.
I guess I am uncertain of what I want to ask here and am not entirely sure if I am explaining this right.
Essentially there are decks I very much dislike to read because they are tricky. I get a feeling from them. Basically the creeps.
I am not sure what this is or if anyone else has experienced this or something like it from their own decks? Anyone?
I love this Oracle deck, the imagery and writing, yet I feel from experience with my Grandmother's cards that they are going to be "one of those decks", tricky like.
When it comes to Divination you should always consult your intuition before consulting your "text book definition" because the skill works off of reading the energy, not the physical cards themselves but their meaning. It's reccomended that when you get a new deck that you cleanse the deck energy-wise then go through each card without checking the little booklet that came with the deck and read the energy of each card and what it means to you intuitively, then when you feel as through you've "read" all you can then check the book because these cards are simply a tool you are the one that is making it happen, so its just as effective to scry or divinate using the face of a rock or a candle flame as it is for a deck of tarot or Oracle cards , because the answers are coming from the energy. If you feel as though you are unsure about an answer then you may perform another divination method to gain a deeper understanding on the meaning of this first one card reading. After all, one card readings are meant for a simply brief "quick check" kind of reading.
You're correct Pike, intuition is a great goal for divinatory methods.
And I do read by intuition. The feelings I received from the card turn, is an example of intuition at work.
This is simply my method with a new deck. I do look into the individual booklet meanings. Then when ready I like to intuitively read spreads themselves. But, I do not entirely disregard the meanings already put forth, but use them as a base.
It is a valid method as any other.
If I really want to intuitively read, and I have done this as well, I will use a standard playing deck of cards. Yet even this method has a base.
Some decks hold onto certain energies. This is gonna sound dumb af, but have you considered setting them in some salt or something similar? Doing a cleansing for them to get rid of stagnant energies you don't want? You shouldn't have a deck you don't enjoy having, you should definitely not be scared of your cards either. If they're holding unwanted energies then help them let those energies go.
If you mean "tricky" otherwise, then that's interesting. I guess it's because they all feel a little different.
I know what you are saying. I have had many different decks and I can tell right away if they are going to be "good" for me or not. I usually go through each card and look at it, then shuffle the deck many different ways. I will then do a reading or two. I can tell right then how it will work. Some decks are like that, I had one that just did not like me at all and some that I just cannot read no matter what.
Oh yeah, regular playing cards are great for doing readings, I use them a lot when I am out and about.
So I just bought a new oracle deck & some runes today, so I find this fitting!
Given my experience, I would buy decks brand new, if able. That way there's no residual energy from a previous user. I first noticed this when I played with my mom's forgotten Waite deck some years ago as a teen;I didn't think to clear it, and while I don't remember what I was "asking" the deck, it came off... hostile? Like it was giving me unnecessary negative-associated cards, if that makes any sense. So I didn't touch it at all afterwards, and bought my own. (It's much nicer.)
I have thistheory that - and I have no idea if this is an already accepted thought, so forgive me -assumingtarot is tapping intocollective higher powers, the tarot deckis less of atool to see outcomesfor yourself and more of a way of higher powers to communicate to you (if that's not redundant haha). Ergo, decks automatically have a presence attached to it that fits the vibration of the communication method, and the more you use something, the better that relationship becomes.
I think that by playing with the oracle deck, you may have imprinted your energy onto it, or perhaps you yourself were subconsciously drawn to the oracle instead of assuming this is what your niece would like. I would instead consider asking spirit (or whateverhigher entity you may subscribe to,) to read for your niece and consider her interests. If the decks don't show card images on the box, I would look it up myself before buying to make sure of it(literally what I did today w/ Super Attractor by Gabrielle Bernstein).
I'm assuming this isn't a surprise gift -perhaps a better option is to simply ask your niece if there aredecks she would like in particular, or make a girl's day shopping for one!
