While looking for the item in question just say this little incantation every now and again.

Keeper of what is lost and found,
Take what was lost and make it found.
I haven't got the time to look
to try and find what you took;
I haven't got the time you see,
Now please give back what belongs to me.

It helps to sometimes name the item you're looking for; otherwise, you might end up finding stuff that was still lost, but not what you were currently looking for.
